Equipment for Making Wine

A way to start off your winemaking experience is through the purchase of winemaking kits. By doing this at a reasonable price, you’ll have everything that is required for you to get started in your winemaking efforts.

An average kit has items such as a plastic fermenter with an airlock lid, a glass carboy with stopper, an auto-siphoning system, automatic bottle filler, hydrometer, corker, corks and a stirring spoon. These kits also tend to come with an instruction manual which will aid you in your efforts. These are all the items which are needed in order to create good wine.

Certain kits also come with supplies for cleaning such as a bottle brush and a sanitizer. The things that you have to add to the mix are the fruits that you need and the bottles that are required to make wine that you can seal with a cork. These kits will cost between one hundred to one hundred and fifty dollars on the average.

With all these and your grapes, berries or any other winemaking fruit along with bottles, you will be prepared to make some great wine. This will usually be all that is required for your first winemaking efforts.

On the other hand if you have some experience with the process or you came up with wine that tastes a whole lot better than you hoped for and you wish to continue making your own wine, you need some additional pieces of equipment in order to ensure that your winemaking process is a whole lot simpler. This means investing some more money in certain gadgets.

It really depends on the type of wine which you are trying to make but you may want to use a fruit crusher instead. These fruit crushers range from anything such as hundred and seventy to about fifteen hundred dollars depending on what you’re rooting for. You have models which are completely manual and those which are electric models. You have those which are made for grapes and those which can crush fruits which are as hard as apples. Certain models will go further by helping you get rid of the stem and leaves easily.

One piece of gear most experienced wine makers would love to have is a press. Different kinds of pressers exist and they range from ratchet presses to bladder presses.

The ratchet press allows the juice to run out of the basket into a container beneath the contraption. It works by using a ratchet to press the fruit and get out the fluid.

The bladder press on the other hand uses water pressure. Winemakers tend to prefer this device because it is a gentler way that grapes can be pressed.

Both devices work excellently though and it’s all about your personal choice and your budget. Some of these devices cost as little as two hundred dollars to six hundred dollars, the bladder presses are the most expensive and they go for as much as seven to thirteen hundred dollars.

Great Gifts for Wine Lovers

If you’re a wine enthusiast, buying gifts for wine lovers can be an exciting shopping experience.  For the less experienced wine drinker, you may have a little more trouble trying to decide what to buy.  Whether you know your gift recipient’s taste or not, finding great gifts for wine lovers isn’t so hard if you start your search with a few basic gift ideas.

The Wine Gift Basket

A wine gift basket is not only great because you can give so much extra with one gift, it can also help you out if you aren’t sure what you gift recipient will like.  A wine gift basket can include a few different types of wine along with some cheeses, chocolates, or other savoury treats.  You can also include wine accessories such as glasses and cork screws.

Wine baskets can be purchased premade or you can make your own and wrap it up with some tissue paper, plastic wrap, and ribbons.  If you know your recipient prefers reds you can choose a few different types of red, or if they like white as well, you can make an arrangement of both.  If you have no clue where to start it may be best to stick with lighter tasting wines or ask your local wine retailer for some suggestions.

Wine Furniture

For a more extravagant gift, wine cabinets or credenzas can be very thoughtful gifts for wine lovers.  If you know they have a large collection, a well-made cabinet can be a very useful gift.  Many cabinets and wine holders can be beautiful and elegantly crafted, so you aren’t only giving a piece of furniture but sometimes a work of art as well.  For smaller gifts, single bottle wine holders are available in all shapes and sizes.  Wine holders can come in the form of plastic cartoon characters, women’s heels, or lovable animals holding your wine bottle.

Creative Gifts for Wine Lovers

Some of the best gifts for wine lovers don’t need to include a bottle of wine.  If you don’t know what to get, a wine gift certificate will allow your recipient to pick out their favourite wines themselves.  Paying for a wine tasting tour or a weekend getaway to a local vineyard is a great way to show your wine loving friends you know their interests.  Some other great gifts for wine lovers are wine books or magazines and home wine making kits.  Depending on how well you know your gift recipient’s tastes, finding the perfect wine gift shouldn’t be too hard with just a couple of ideas and a little shopping around.

Are Plastic Wine Glasses Better Than Glass?

Quite often people prefer glass over plastic wine glasses, but there are times when plastic is the better choice.  Glass may give you a better view of your wine and will have a more elegant look than plastic, but you can still see your wine pretty clearly in plastic wine glasses.  Glass is also more prone to fingerprint smudges while plastic wine glasses don’t look so dirty after having been used for awhile.

Washing Dishes and Cleaning Up

After a large get together, you’re going to be left with a lot of dishes to clean up.  Plastic wine glasses can cut out a lot of clean up time because you can just toss them out when you’re done with them.  If you’re having a wine tasting party, you’ll be saving yourself a lot of washing between different wines by just using a new plastic glass for every different bottle.

Broken Glasses

As you may have experienced from past parties, wine glasses tend to get broken as the night goes on.  People get to talking, get distracted, and knock things over or drink a little too much of that wine and start to get a bit clumsy.  With plastic wine glasses, you’re still going to have to wipe up any spilled wine but you won’t have to collect any pieces of broken glass or worry that one of your guests are going to step on a stray shard.  You’ll also be saving yourself the grief of losing any expensive glasses or being left with an incomplete wine glass set.

The Cost Factor

Wine glasses aren’t cheap and most people don’t have a cupboard full of glasses on hand.  When you have more guests than you have glasses it can be expensive to buy multiple extra sets to accommodate everyone.  A few packs of plastic wine glasses can be purchased for a fraction of the price.  You can also look for higher quality plastic wine glasses that are cheaper than regular glasses but look nicer than the plastic dollar store glasses.

For any large events such as weddings or New Year’s Eve parties, plastic wine glasses are really the only way to go if you don’t want to spend a fortune and lose a lot of that investment from broken or chipped glasses.  The larger the event, the more convenient plastic wine glasses become.
